2nd Quarter Extra Credit Opportunities

During 2nd Quarter, I would like my students to be able to notice the Spanish in the world around them and to try to translate it. To help with this, I am offering an extra credit opportunity. Students, you may do this extra credit assignment up to 3 times this quarter. Each time you turn it in, I will give you a 5 points extra credit certificate to be used on any test, quiz, or worksheet.

Each week I will write a Spanish message somewhere around the school. It will usually be handwritten, but sometimes it might be typed. There will only be one message per week. The message will be "good" from Monday to Friday. On Friday I will tell each class where the message was and what it meant. They will usually be funny or random messages.

For the extra credit, you will need to find the week's Spanish message sometime before Friday, as extra credit will be due then. Once you find it, on a sheet of paper, first write the message down in Spanish. Then, use any resource you can think of in order to translate it to English on your paper. Write the translation. Third, tell me which resources you used to translate it. Finally, tell me on your paper where you found the message. Make sure your name is on it and turn it in to me sometime during the week. If everything is correct, you will get your 5 points extra credit certificate.

As of Wednesday, Oct 12, the first message is already up. It's good until Friday the 17th. Good luck and happy hunting!

Tuesday

Notes from Tuesday, October 11th

The suffix -ito
Spanish speakers often add the suffix -ito to the end of a noun. This makes the noun: cute, little, and loved.

If the noun ends in a vowel, drop the vowel and add ito (m) or ita (f). Examples: el gato - gatito (a kitten). el perro - perrito (a puppy). La hermana - la hermanita (little sister). Tori - Torita - cute little Tori

If the noun ends in a consonant, add cito (m) or cita (f) to the end. Examples: Josh - Joshcito (cute little Josh). cuidad - cuidadcita (cute little city)

The personal a
In a Spanish sentence, when the action happens to a person, you have to add the letter a right after the verb. If the action doesn't happen to a person, no a is necessary.
Examples: Yo beso a mi abuelita - I kiss my grandma
Yo beso el libro - I kiss the book (no a needed)
Ella pega a su hermano - She hits her brother

Monday

Week of October 10-14

Monday 10 - Today I checked your verb conjugation homework from Friday, we reviewed conjugation, and we did a flash card game. We also made flash cards for our verb endings. Homework: finish your verb conjugation worksheet, due tomorrow. You need to make 5 flash cards with the following:
Yo - o, for all verbs
Tu - as for -ar verbs, es for er/ir verbs
El, ella, usted, singular noun, 1 name - a for -ar verbs, e for er/ir verbs
Nosotros, yo+anything - amos for -ar verbs, emos for -er verbs, imos for -ir
Ellos, ellas, ustedes, plural nouns, 2 + names - an for ar verb, en for er/ir verbs

Tuesday 11 - Today we went over last night's homework, we did a class verb conjugation game, and we took notes (with examples) on the personal a and the -ito suffix. If you were absent, print off the post about the notes.
